Virginia wildfires scorch most acreage in 45 years

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Virginia forestry officials say wildfires consumed more acres in the first four months of this year than the state’s yearly totals for the past 45 years.
The Virginia Department of Forestry said Wednesday that the total number of acres burned in 948 fires so far this year was 25,646. The last time more acres burned was in 1963, when 44,823 acres were consumed.
